Students will learn to design, construct, query, and manage relational databases using SQL, including database architecture, normalization, data manipulation, joins, transactions, and indexing. The course will also provide training in cybersecurity principles and practices for protecting sensitive healthcare information, including patient and physician data. Topics include database authentication and access control, SQL injection attacks and prevention, encryption, data protection, database auditing, vulnerability assessment, and threat detection. Students will also examine cloud database security, database hardening, backup and recovery, and cybersecurity considerations associated with non-relational databases. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on exercises that develop both SQL programming proficiency and practical database cybersecurity skills . Students will apply these skills to realistic healthcare scenarios involving the management, protection, and analysis of sensitive data. Estimated course enrolment : 28 Estimated TA support : 40-50 Class Schedule: Specific dates to be determined in consultation with the MBiotech Program Office (NOTE: All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Winter 2027) Sessional Dates of Appointment : January 9th- April 30th, 2027 Salary: SL I $18,253 (includes 4% vacation pay) Minimum Qualifications: An undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. Demonstrated professional experience in cybersecurity, database administration, database security, or secure software development. Strong proficiency in SQL programming, relational database design, and database management systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server. Practical knowledge of database cybersecurity, including authentication, access controls, SQL injection vulnerabilities and prevention, encryption, database auditing, and vulnerability assessment. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts effectively and deliver hands-on instruction in SQL programming and database cybersecurity. Demonstrated professional experience working with healthcare databases, sensitive patient or physician information, or digital health technologies, including an understanding of the cybersecurity challenges associated with healthcare environments. Experience with cloud database security, security monitoring, incident investigation, or database hardening. Preferred Qualifications: A Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline. Previous teaching experience at the university level or experience delivering professional technical training. Description of Duties: All usual duties related to the design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course, including: Selecting and inviting a series of speakers if deemed appropriate. Coordinating student team projects. Meeting with each student team to guide/advise them on their projects. Holding office hours as required. Marking/evaluating; recording student attendance; recording and submitting grades; and communicating with students on course-related matters.
